Airport travel

Car service or Uber Black to Logan, and how the two actually differ

Last updated August 4, 20265 minute readEl Khourys Transportation, Methuen

Book the ride app when the trip is short, the plan is firm and price is the only thing you are optimising. Book the car service when a specific vehicle, a specific person and a fixed price matter more than saving a few minutes, which on an airport run is most of the time. The structural difference is the pricing model: a ride app quotes at the moment you tap and reprices with demand, while a car service quotes in writing in advance and holds that figure through a delay.

Most comparisons of these two are written by somebody selling one of them, so they compare the best version of theirs against the worst version of yours. This one starts from the airport's own published data, which has no opinion at all, and one figure in it runs directly against what almost everybody assumes.

Which one does the airport charge more?

The ride app, and by a wide margin. Massport raised the per trip fee on ride app pickups and drop offs from $3.25 to $5.50, effective July 1, 2025, in agreements announced with both Uber and Lyft on March 19, 2025. Massport's published schedule for a limousine or van up to 15 passengers is $3.25.

Service typePer trip airport fee
Ride app, since July 1, 2025$5.50
Limousine or van up to 15 passengers$3.25
Taxi$2.25

That does not make a car service cheaper. It does mean the price gap between the two is not the airport's doing, which is the useful thing to know, because it puts the real difference back where it belongs: the vehicle, the driver and the pricing model.

How is the price set in each one?

A ride app prices at the moment you tap, from live demand. That is genuinely good when demand is low and genuinely painful at five o'clock on the Sunday of a holiday weekend, which is exactly when a lot of people fly.

A car service quotes the trip in advance, in writing, and the quote is the price. Nothing about a queue at the tunnel or a wave of arrivals changes it after the fact. For an airport run booked three weeks out, that is the whole argument.

Who is actually driving?

With a ride app, whichever driver accepts the trip. Massachusetts had over 104,000 certified rideshare drivers as of the state's most recent published figures, and the platform matches you to one of them at the moment of the request.

With a car service, a specific chauffeur is assigned to your booking in advance, employed by the company whose name is on the vehicle. When you book with us the person who collects you has had your itinerary since before the day, and if you fly the route regularly it tends to be the same person.

Who regulates each one?

Different agencies, and this is the part most comparisons skip. Transportation network companies in Massachusetts operate under Chapter 159A and a half of the General Laws and the Department of Public Utilities regulations at 220 CMR 274.00, which took effect on September 22, 2017.

A for hire passenger carrier is a different animal. It holds operating authority, it files proof of insurance, and its roadside inspection record is published under its USDOT number where anyone can read it. Those are the checks a corporate travel policy asks for, and they are the reason the two are not interchangeable on a company account.

How big is rideshare in Massachusetts?

Very. The Department of Public Utilities Rideshare Data Report published on June 3, 2026 recorded 100.5 million rides across Massachusetts in 2025, a rise of 10.03 percent on the prior year, with 41.56 million of them starting in Boston. The state collects a twenty cent assessment on every one.

Scale is the ride app's real advantage and it is a serious one. There is a car near you almost always, almost everywhere. What scale cannot do is tell you which car, driven by whom, at what price, three weeks from Tuesday at four in the morning.

Where does each one collect you at Logan?

Not the same place, and the walk is often the deciding factor with luggage. Massport gives a pre booked car service a limo stand at your terminal and routes ride app vehicles into a garage. We laid out all four terminals, both services, in its own piece rather than repeating the table here.

So which should you book?

Which one fits the trip
If this is trueBook
A short hop, firm timing, one bagRide app
An early departure you cannot missCar service
A late international arrival with checked bagsCar service
Four or more people traveling togetherCar service
A company account needing a carrier record and insurance filingCar service
A child seat you need fitted before you landCar service
Spontaneous, right now, price is everythingRide app
Written by a car service, so read it with that in mind. The first and last rows are there because they are true.

There is no version of this where a ride app is the wrong answer for every trip. It is the wrong answer for the trip where being collected by a specific person, in a specific vehicle, at a price agreed in advance, is the thing you are actually buying.

Booked in advance, by somebody who already knows your flight number.

An airport transfer with us is a named vehicle, a chauffeur who has your itinerary before the day, and a price agreed in writing beforehand. Flight tracking runs in both directions, so an inbound that lands ninety minutes late finds a car that already moved. Nothing about that reprices while you are in the air.
