How early to leave Methuen for a flight out of Logan

Last updated August 4, 20267 minute readEl Khourys Transportation, Methuen

For a domestic flight out of Logan, leave Methuen about three hours before departure, and closer to three and a half in the middle of a weekday morning. Massport asks you to be at the terminal two hours ahead, the drive is roughly 40 minutes down I-93 when the road is clear, and the rest is the cushion that covers the mornings when it is not. For an international departure, add an hour.

Missing a flight out of Logan almost never happens because somebody drove slowly. It happens because they planned a nine o'clock morning around a four o'clock drive. Here is the whole calculation, with the numbers we actually use.

How long does the drive from Methuen to Logan actually take?

About 40 minutes, and roughly 31 miles, straight down I-93, on a road with nothing on it. That figure is real and we lean on it every single morning. It is also the best case, and the best case only exists before about five in the morning.

How early does Logan want you at the terminal?

Two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international one. That is Massport's own recommendation, and it covers check-in, the security line, and the walk to your gate.

One detail worth knowing if you are on the first flight of the day: Massport notes that security checkpoints normally open two hours before the first departure. Arriving at three in the morning for a five thirty flight buys you a locked checkpoint and a chair.

So what time should you leave Methuen?

Below is the arithmetic we use when we set a pickup. The terminal arrival column comes from Massport. The drive band comes from the road at that hour. The cushion is ours, and it is deliberately wider in the middle of the day than at dawn, because the middle of the day is where the variance lives.

Planning approximations, not a schedule. International departures move every row an hour earlier, because Massport asks for three hours rather than two. Your actual pickup is set from your flight, the day of the week, and what the road is doing that morning.

Which hours actually break the plan?

Weekday mid-mornings and the late-afternoon build. INRIX ranked Boston fifth among the most congested cities in the United States for 2025, at 83 hours lost per driver over the year, in a scorecard published on December 1, 2025. Chicago topped that list at 112 hours. Those are the eighty three hours your ten o'clock flight is competing for.

The shape of the week matters as much as the total. Southbound I-93 into the city runs heaviest Tuesday through Thursday and noticeably lighter on Monday and Friday mornings, which is why the same trip can feel like two different roads inside one work week.

MassDOT publishes a roadway travel time dashboard showing typical times by day of week and by hour. It is the honest tool if you would rather check your own morning than take our word for any of this.

Does the I-93 HOV lane help?

On a weekday morning, yes, when the vehicle qualifies. MassDOT runs a southbound high-occupancy lane on I-93 north of Boston on weekday mornings, and the current operating hours live on the state's own page, because they do change. A chauffeured run with two or more people aboard is precisely the case the lane exists for, and on a bad Tuesday it is worth a meaningful number of minutes.

Which tunnel do you take to the airport?

It depends on the hour, and it is one of the small decisions you are paying a chauffeur to make rather than make yourself at 70 miles an hour. Coming from the north, the Callahan Tunnel on Route 1A and the Ted Williams Tunnel on I-90 are the two ways under the harbor. The Sumner runs the other direction, inbound toward downtown, so it is the tunnel that brings you home rather than the one that takes you to your flight.

Massachusetts tunnel tolling is fully electronic now, so nobody stops at a booth. Modernization work has meant overnight and weekend closures, which is the other reason the route gets chosen on the morning itself rather than the week before.

What about a 4 a.m. pickup?

Those are the easy ones, and they are a large share of what we do. The road from the Valley to Logan before five in the morning is genuinely empty, 40 minutes means 40 minutes, and the only real risk left in the trip is an alarm clock.

Our habit on those is to be outside ten minutes before the time on the reservation, with the lights on. A 4 a.m. pickup means the car is already at the curb at 3:50, so nobody stands in a dark driveway wondering whether they wrote the date down wrong.

The mistake I see every week is somebody planning a nine o'clock flight around a four o'clock drive. Same road, same exits, twenty five minutes of difference. We put the cushion in the pickup time so nobody has to learn that lesson at the tunnel.

What about the trip back from Logan?

The return leg runs on a different clock, because the number that matters is not when the aircraft lands. It is when you reach the curb, and between those two sit taxi time to the gate, the walk, and the wait at the carousel. On an international arrival into Terminal E, add passport control to that list.

The drive home is usually kinder than the drive down. Northbound out of the city at nine in the evening is a clear run, and even a Friday afternoon return is easier than the same hour heading in. What complicates the return is not the road, it is finding each other at the airport, and Logan has a specific answer for that at every terminal.

We wrote that part up separately, terminal by terminal, because it is the half of the trip most people have never been told how to do.

What happens if the flight moves?

We move with it. Flight tracking runs on every airport transfer in both directions, so a delay becomes a scheduling problem on our side rather than a line on your bill. If the airline reroutes you onto a different flight entirely, one call or text moves the whole reservation.

What do we actually do with all of this?

You never have to run any of it. Give us the flight number and the address and we will set a pickup time and tell you why it is that time. The trip is quoted per trip before you book, the quote is the price you pay, and a delay never changes it.
